READING · A FICTIONAL RENTAL PLAN
Before the journey
Maya and Leo are going to rent a small car for a weekend visit. They made the plan yesterday. Before collecting it, they are going to read the rental agreement and check which documents the company requires. Requirements depend on the company and destination.
They will ask about breakdown cover, the fuel policy and any mileage limit. They are going to inspect the car and note existing damage before leaving. If they find a problem, Maya offers, “I’ll tell the agent.” They will not assume that cover, charges or fuel rules are the same everywhere.
Then they are going to visit a museum. Leo has not chosen the pickup time yet. During the conversation he decides, “I’ll collect it at nine.” The route is fictional: right onto Oak Road, straight past the lights, then first left onto Museum Street. The museum is on the right, next to the library.

Agent: Have you decided which car you’re going to hire?
Traveller: Yes. I’m going to hire the small car. I decided yesterday. What should I check?
Agent: Read the rental agreement and check the fuel policy and mileage limit. These rules vary between companies.
Traveller: I haven’t chosen the pickup time. I know, I’ll collect it at nine. Can you help me find the museum?
Agent: I’ll write down the directions. Leave the station and turn right onto Oak Road. Go straight past the traffic lights. Then take the first left onto Museum Street. The museum is on the right, next to the library.
